We have officially introduced the Understanding Yukoners' Attitudes Towards Vaccines (ATV) Project to the Yukon! At the 2023 Yukon Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (YSPOR) Health Summit, November 15th - 16th, 2023, Math'ieya, Kari, and Ruth - with a guest appearance by Dr. Katherine Smart - presented an introduction to the ATV Project to the health community.
The YSPOR Health Summit was attended by community leaders, health professionals and health care providers, researchers, and community members from the Yukon, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories.
The presentation introduced the ATV project as an example of how collaborative, community-based research can decolonize research processes. We shared the story of how the project began; how the Yukon First Nations COVID Response Team grew into the not-for-profit organization One Yukon Coalition (OYC); and how the OYC, Council of Yukon First Nations and Yukon University teams came together to form the Project Steering Committee. Finally, we introduced our next steps in the project: To engage in community-based case studies where we have conversations with First Nations communities about their vaccine-related attitudes, then to reach all Yukoners through a territory-wide survey, to learn about trends in vaccine communication and decision-making.
Making the results of our project as widely accessible as possible will increase understanding of how Yukoners make vaccine-related decisions, thereby supporting First Nations Governments, Territorial and Federal Governments, organizations, leaders, communities, and individuals to be better prepared in future public health emergencies.
