We are excited to announce we will be launching Nationally and Territorially representative surveys to learn how Yukoners' attitudes towards vaccines differ and/or align with the broader Canadian population.
If you are invited to participate in a survey, you may have some questions for us. For your convenience, we've addressed a number of Frequently Asked Questions here:
1. What is the purpose of this project?
This project aims to understand how Yukoners make decisions about vaccines, focusing on COVID-19 and influenza vaccines.
2. Who is involved in this project?
It is a collaboration between the Council of Yukon First Nations, One Yukon Coalition, Yukon University, and Yukon First Nations governments, guided by a Steering Committee that incorporates community perspectives.
3. Why is this research being conducted?
The project works to understand vaccine uptake in Yukon communities in order to better inform and create culturally and contextually relevant communication strategies. By understanding the factors influencing vaccine decisions, we hope to support communities’ readiness for future public health emergencies.
4. Where is this survey being administered?
Two surveys are administered concurrently. A national survey will be administered to a Canadian-wide audience and territorial survey will be administered to a Yukon-based audience.
5. Why are two surveys being conducted, one National and one Territorial?
Conducting both a national and a territorial survey allows the research team to compare Yukoners’ attitudes towards vaccines with those of Canadians nationwide. This comparison helps the team identify areas where Yukon-specific vaccine communication should be developed and where existing Canadian communication strategies are sufficient.
6. Who is administering the survey?
Abacus Data is administering the National survey and DataPath Systems is administering the territorial survey, to ensure representative samples are achieved in both.
7. What is a representative sample?
A representative sample in a survey is a subset of the population that accurately reflects the characteristics of the larger group. A representative sample includes diverse demographics, such as age, gender, ethnicity, and geographic location, which helps capture a wide range of perspectives and experiences related to the survey topic.
8. Why is a representative sample important?
A representative sample ensures that survey results can be generalized to the entire population, better contributing to supporting informed-decision-making. 9. Who can participate in the surveys? The surveys are open to those who receive an invitation. Invitations are sent through Abacus Data for the national survey and DataPath Systems for the territorial survey.

10. How will the data be used?
The data will help identify trends in vaccine communication and decision-making, particularly within Yukon’s unique context. The findings will be shared with First Nations governments, Territorial and Federal governments, community organizations, and the public to inform future public health strategies.
11. What safeguards are in place to protect participant privacy?
All survey results are anonymous. Data will be handled in accordance with ethical guidelines and privacy regulations, ensuring that all collected data is used responsibly and only for the purposes outlined in the project. Data from our community-based conversations, which informed the survey design, are handled in accordance with OCAP principles.
12. How will the results be communicated to the community?
The results will be communicated through various channels, including presentations, publications, reports and shared on partner websites.
13. What should I do if I have concerns about the project?
This project has been reviewed on ethical grounds by the Yukon University Research Ethics Board. Any questions regarding your rights or ethical concerns you may have as a participant may be addressed to the REB Co-Chairs by emailing ethics@yukonu.ca
14. How can I stay updated on the project?
